Syndication can be a bloggers best friend when it comes to getting regular readers for your blog. With tens of millions of blogs in the Blogosphere, a reader that comes to your blog may never return because they didn’t bookmark it or it didn’t have an address they could remember. With the use of an RSS Feed you can change all that. RSS stands for a few different things but I have always referred to it as Really Simple Syndication. Whatever you call it, it basically boils down to one thing. It is the ability to deliver your content via an XML file that is generated on your site or a service such as Feedburner.
Make it easy for your readers to Subscribe - Make the link to your feed easily identifiable and easy to subscribe to. Use the globally recognized feed symbol
to help readers find you feed quickly and easily. I would also put the feed link above the fold near the top of the page.
Ask readers to subscribe - Ask your readers to subscribe to your feed. At the bottom of posts include a blurb encouraging readers to subscribe if they like the post or topic of your blog. Example “If you enjoy reading this and other articles about Technology and Gadgets please subscribe using the RSS Feed link in the upper right hand corner of this page.” You could even include the Feed link inthe post itself as another way for people to subscribe.
Use a Feed service - Using a Feed service such as Feedburner will help you promote, track and monetize your feed. Success For Your Blog uses feedburner primarily to give users an easy experience subscribing to the feed and tracking number of people that have subscribed. Now that Feedburner is part of the Google Family of products, the pro features have been made available for free.
Challenge of Subscribers over Blog visitors - The biggest challenge you will face is monetizing your feed. There are several ways to monetize your blog such as Adsense, banners, text links, and others. The problem is that none of these advertisments show up in your feed. A couple of services that help you monetize your feed is Text Link Ads and FeedBurner. And although these services can help deliver ads to your readers you will see that the amount you make will be considerably less that waht you make on your blogs site.
