Blog ads are so incredibly boring these days

For most bloggers monetization is part of our formula for success. Success for your Blog will probably start to monetize in the first quarter of 2008. The problem is as I look around to see what type of ads I want to display, I find most blog are doing the exact same thing and its kinda boring if you ask me. The typical ad layout is a 468 x 60 banner up at the top of the page. Then the 125 x 125 button farm on the right hand side just above the fold. This usually consists of 4 – 8 buttons. Then there is an area of 6 – 10 text links below the buttons. This section is usually labeled as top sites, or some other catchy name to let us know without a shadow of a doubt that they are paid links. I guess if the old saying is true, if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, I should follow the same footsteps as all the other blogs out there. But I don’t think that would be much fun.

So I am off to develop something exciting, that adds value to the reader and the advertiser. Or at least I hope create something exciting. I’ll at least learn something in the process. Cause another thing they seem to say is, nothing risked is nothing gained.

So what ideas do you have? I;m not sure but I want something outside the norm of the typical advertisements so I’m going to have to brainstorm a bit to see what I can come up with.

And I’ll probably share it with you if I think its good enough.

Great post Jason. Although I notice the little dig on my ScratchBack widgets. It’s ok. :)

You’re thinking the right way. Innovation happens when you solve a problem in a unique way. Good stuff.

Na I think your ScratchBack widget is probably the most innovative thing I’ve seen when it comes to ad space. Its good for the site owner and its good for other bloggers looking to grab some quick links.

I actually grabbed the ScratchBack artwork last week to make a custom widget for SFYB. :-)
