Once your blogs gets some good search ranking you experience an influx of comment spam. Spammers try desperately to get their comments in your posts to get some quality links. I have noticed one tactic being used by spammers is to get a comment approved so that subsequent comments are automatically approved. Of course this only works if you have the settings in Word Press to allow subsequent entries to be automatically approved.
I personally have Success For Your Blog setup so that each comment has to be approved. It does slow down the conversation a bit but since I am in front of a computer for half the day in most cases I can get to them fairly quickly. Plus I am not getting an extreme amount of comments.
So just be on the lookout for Spammers trying to slip by you. Check your settings in Word Press by going to Options > Discussion and look to see what you have selected under “Before a comment appears:” If you have “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” selected buy not “An administrator must always approve the comment” selected you could be setting yourself up for comment SPAM.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t even considered that a spammer might try leaving a legit comment just to get his foot in the door. Shame shame!
